Independence Day!
The United States of America celebrates the day it declared Independence on the 4th of July every summer. 4th of July celebrations typically bring friends and family together for barbecues, concerts, carnivals, parades, and of course fireworks.
Why Fireworks? In a letter written to his wife Abigail on July 3rd 1776, John Adams wrote the following referring to Independence Day:
“It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”
Fireworks & Barbecue
In America, Independence Day celebrations are an icon of summer. Every 4th of July, there are both private and public fireworks displays all over the country. Some families choose to stay home and purchase consumer fireworks, and others decide to go see one of the many professionally produced fireworks displays. Patriotic spirit, the smell of barbecue, and the beauty of fireworks fill the warm summer air each 4th of July.
Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence, which signified Independence from Great Britain, was approved by the United States Congress on July 4th, 1776. Many well-known quotes come from the Declaration of Independence, such as “…all men are created equal,” and “…Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
The Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 delegates, some of whom were well-known historical figures, such as Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, Samuel Adams, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin.
